SpringHill History
On April 20, 1947, a small group of 17 men and women began meeting in each other’s homes and a one-room schoolhouse on Nassauville Road. Although few in number, they were united in a common goal: to establish a church in their community and serve the Lord Jesus Christ.
Springhill called Rev. J. F. Green, a bi-vocational pastor who also worked in logging, to be its first pastor. Owning nothing but their faith in God, they began to meet, hold revivals and carry on the Lord’s business. That was the beginning of Springhill Baptist Church.
In May 1950, Springhill borrowed $500 to build its first permanent building on donated land from the Bennett family, whose descendents still attend Springhill.
The church continued to grow, using the main building for services and dividing the schoolhouse for classes. The schoolhouse is no longer there, but the main building is now our Youth Building. Church members at that time were baptized in the nearby Nassau River.
Above, another church potluck takes place in the 1950s. By 1963, Springhill called its first full-time pastor, Rev. Daniel E. Wade, the first of several men of God who would lead Springhill.
Springhill constructs its sanctuary building to further meet the needs of its growing congregation, opening its doors May 10, 1981. Now known as the Old Sanctuary, this building continues to be used for Wednesday night Family Bible Study as well as baptisms. Offices within the building continue to serve church staff.
As Springhill continued to grow, a building with 10 classrooms was added to the church campus in 1984. The classrooms are still used today for Sunday School. (The building is behind the Old Sanctuary, pictured here in the 1980s.)
God called Springhill, bursting at the seams, into its next phase of faith, growth, and leadership with a vision for a new facility: a Family Life Center that would serve a multitude of purposes for God’s service to the church family and the entire community. The 26,000-square-foot building, completed in late 2000, continues to serve as Springhill's location for worship, additional Sunday School classes, Awana Clubs, meals, and many other ministries.
In 2019, Springhill called Brian Winburn to be its Senior Pastor. He was joined in late 2020 by Youth Pastor Ben Cooley.
Today we have thriving ministries through which we serve God together. Some examples include our AWANA children’s ministry, Shining Lights construction ministry, free Community Meals ministry, Bethlehem Marketplace fall festival, Back to School backpacks ministry, a collaboration with the Barnabas Center to provide food to the needy, and a multi-church softball program, which takes place on ballfields on our church grounds.
